On May 4, journalist and Ukrainian Armed Forces volunteer Oleksandr Makhov, 36, was killed in hostilities near Iziyum, in the Kharkiv region. As a war correspondent, he worked at the Ukraina and Ukraina 24 TV channels covering the war in the East for many years. In October 2021, he started working at the Dom TV channel.
Oleksandr Makhov was born in the Luhansk region. He was a veteran of combat in eastern Ukraine. First encountering warfare as a journalist, in 2015 he volunteered to join the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In addition, he hosted a podcast titled Viiskkor (War Correspondent), and conducted training for war correspondents. In 2020, Makhov was the only representative of Ukrainian media aboard the plane evacuating Ukrainian citizens from Wuhan, China at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Together with members of the 22nd Ukrainian expeditionary group, Oleksandr visited Antarctica. On the very first day of Russia’s full-scale invasion against Ukraine, Makhov returned to the frontline. He was known under the call sign “Journalist.”
"I am a veteran and reservist and I am going to war. It’s time for the war of liberation! I will be fighting and killing as long as I have strength. I serve the Ukrainian people!” wrote Makhov.
