On July 27, 2022, it became known that journalist and serviceman Oleksandr Savochenko was killed in a battle near Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.
Oleksandr Savochenko was born to a rural family in the Chernihiv region. His talent and diligence led him to become a journalist against all odds. After graduating from school, Savochenko entered Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University and began to work on TV from his student years. He was a journalist with such popular Ukrainian broadcasts as STB, Kyiv, Channel 5, and Suspilne. Additionally, he worked for the AFP news agency. Oleksandr’s colleagues note his professionalism and abiding reliability.
“Sasha was a calm and reticent man. Sometimes during live streams, when everybody was yelling and cutting soundbites almost robotically, Sasha was always the calmest,” presenter Ilona Dovhan recalls.
Oleksandr woke up daily at 4 a.m. to start working at 7 a.m. He lived in the town of Brovary with his wife. Their daughter was born after his death.
Oleksandr Savochenko enlisted voluntarily in the army during the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He never told his parents about himself fighting at the frontline. Sometimes he called them and said that he had been working on safe territories as a journalist.
Oleksandr was 36 years old. He had parents, a wife, and a newborn daughter.
